Copa MX Review: Group 4

Liga de Ascenso sides Merida and Delfines are matched up with Liga MX sides Atlante and Pumas de la UNAM in Group 4. Llave 1 First Leg recaps, lineups, and group table are below.

# Team W L D GF GD Total Pts
1 Delfines 1 0 0 3 +1 3
2 Mérida 1 0 0 1 +1 3
3 Pumas 0 1 0 2 -1 0
4 Atlante 0 1 0 0 -1 0

Atlante 0-1 Mérida

Atlante are not passing through what one could call their best moment, and their poor run of form – and what some would call bad luck – carried over into the Copa MX. Atlante made a number of changes for their game against the Venados, but did include several regular league players.

In their first game under head coach Pablo Marini, who took charge of the club following their loss to Veracruz this past weekend (and who was in the stadium but not allowed to be on the bench), Atlante were unable to find the back of the net in a game that looked likely to end scoreless.

A late goal doomed Atlante, a goal that came from a bungled play between the keeper and defender Manuel Viniegra. The defender slipped, the keeper couldn’t get to the ball, and Freddy Martin gave the visitors the lead with what would be the winning goal.

Atlante: Yosgart Guitérrez, Héctor Miguel Morales, Ricardo Jiménez, Jonathan Bornstein, Jorge Hernández, Manuel Viniegra, Carlos Acosta, Ángel Baltazar, Luis Guillermo Madrigal, Paul Uscanga, Alberto García (Arturo Muñoz, 77).

Mérida: Odín Patiño, Diego Jiménez, Rodrigo Noya, José Luis “Parejita” López, Oscar Zea, Aldair Basto, Félix Rodríguez, Fausto Ruiz, Emanuel Guzmán, Marcelo Cazaubón (Freddy Martín, 46), Julio Atilano.

Delfines del Carmen 3-2 Pumas de la UNAM (Group 4)

With a smattering of first-team players but a largely reserve lineup, Pumas were unable to turn around their poor run of form in the Copa MX, losing to their Liga de Ascenso hosts 3-2.

Delfines opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a precision free kick by Emilio López, and although Pumas were able to equalize in the 28th minute through Daniel Ramírez, Delfines always looked the more likely side.

The Liga de Ascenso side regained the lead before the break from another free kick, although this one wasn’t a direct strike on goal. The ball was served in to the back post and headed down into the center, where Cleiton Oliveira was waiting. The Brazilian roofed the ball and celebrated with an impressive series of backflips.

Delfines would make it 3-1 shortly after halftime, with a goal from Michel Vázquez in the 49th minute. A 56th-minute penalty kick taken by Ramírez brought Pumas back within one, but the universitarios were unable to muster the third goal that would have equalized the game.

Delfines: Liborio Sánchez, Daniel Valdez, Raúl Rico, Hiram Quintero (Mitchel Oviedo, 65), Diego Díaz (Christian Pérez, 81), Jorge Echavarría, Alex Diego, Emilio López, José Rosas, Michel Vázquez, Cleiton Oliveira (Pedro Hernández, 61).

Pumas: Alfredo Daldívar, Alan Mendoza, Luis Fernando Quintana (Erik Vera, 57), Aarón Sandoval, Javier Cortés (Fernado Morales, 82), Carlos Campos, Leandro Augusto, Fernando Espinosa, Ismael Sosa, Alfonso Nieto (Manuel Pérez, 46), Daniel Ramírez.
