Pumas de la UNAM vs Atlas – Jornada 7

Pumas de la UNAM came from behind to earn a draw with Atlas, which ended their winning streak but extended their unbeaten run to four games.

Atlas took advantage of some uncertainty in Pumas’s defense due to the absences of usual starters Marco Antonio Palacios (suspension) and Darío Verón (injury), and were able to generate dangerous chances through Maikon Leite and José María Ortigoza.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a beautiful goal from outside the box from right winger Arturo González. The goal gave Atlas a boost and they took control of most of the first half, which ended in controversial fashion.

The controversy came about because referee Jorge Isaac Rojas turned down two penalty appeals in the final two minutes of the half. The first, in the 44th minute, came when Martín Bravo was taken down in the box by Sergio Amaury Ponce, and the second came a minute later on the opposite end of the field when a shot from Edson Rivera seemed to strike the arm of Efraín Velarde.

José Luis Trejo made an attack-minded substitution at halftime, and another not quite twenty minutes later, while Atlas’s first sub was not strategic, but rather forced. 19-year-old Arturo González, the goalscorer, was unable to continue after a suffering a clash of heads with Luis Fuentes. Fuentes was able to return to the field after receiving treatment, but González had to be taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Despite Pumas’s attack-minded substitutions, Atlas’s defense was solid and well-organized. Just when it started to seem like Atlas would hold on for the win, Ismael Sosa’s shot from outside the box beat his compatriot Federico Vilar in the 78th minute.

With the draw, Pumas reaches 11 points, equalizing their point total from all of the Apertura 2013, while Atlas reaches 6.
